Today, we recognize the birthday of freedom fighter Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the inauguration of our second-term president Barack Obama.
It is a momentous day. As with any such day, the touch of a Kate can be felt somewhere in time and history. And today’s trivia find demonstrates once again that Kates can always be found in the middle of the action.
The Martin Luther King , Jr., Papers Project — hosted by Standford — includes a letter sent to one Katie E. Whickam, president of the National Beauty Culturist League, Inc, by Dr. King himself some 55 years ago.
Dr. King recognizes in the letter the immense resources of women in the United States and asks that Ms. Whickam provide the associate director of the nascent Southern Christian Leadership Conference voice at an upcoming meeting of the National Beauty Culturist League, Inc. I hope you will take this opportunity to visit the site of the letter to read the full text of this wonderful document on this historical day!
This letter reminds me that there is power in womanhood, in beauty, and in positive purpose; and once again, I am proud to be a Kate.
