9 Olympians who are named Katie

I have a theory. While Kates tend not to be the most athletic gals on the block, Katies are a whole different story. I don’t think it’s just a coincidence that every time I’ve written about an athlete on this site, her name has been Katie – from high school basketball phenom Katie Collier to runner Katie Flood, who holds the record for the world’s second fastest mile.

So I’m not too surprised to see that there are a lot Katies competing in the London Summer Olympics, kicking off tomorrow. Here, meet 9 of them.

The verdict on the most Katie-filled Olympic team? Britain’s synchronized swimming team, which runs three Katies deep.

Skateboard on Kate Moss’ face

Skate MossSkateboarding was huge when I was in high school circa 1997.  I won’t lie—back then, I spent countless hours in parking garages watching my male friends, as well as many a crush, do pretty much nothing on their board but fall and scrape their knee.  Back then, I loved a half-buzzed, half-long flopover haircut, as well as a pair of Vans.

These days, every now and then, I’ll see a group of skateboarders in the distance and think, “Cool. Kids today are still doing that.” Then I get a little closer and see that—no—the skateboarders are actually 30, like me, they just appear more teenager-like in the distance. Chances are they have jobs, maybe even wives and kids—and are just still in love with that thing from their youth.

Speaking of things people were in love with in the ’90s, supermodel Kate Moss ranked highly. Back then, we didn’t know about her drug habits and she hadn’t yet been accused of burning teddy bears in anger. Back then, she was the willowy, bed-headed Calvin Klein model whose pout oozed sex appeal.

All this to say, that I am not completely shocked that there is a line of “fantasy” skateboards called Skate Moss.

Is Kate Upton bad luck for the New York Jets?

Kate UptonAs a sports fan, you have several options for what to think when your team isn’t performing as well as you would like them to. You can chalk it up to subpar play or to a difficult schedule, full of face-offs with teams of a high skill level. You can point to some issue of chemistry on your team, either between the players or the coaching staff. You can dismiss it as a run of bad luck, the statistical inevitably that when the options are ‘win’ or ‘lose,’ sometimes your team will lose. Or you can go the direction that many fans of the New York Jets have gone following the team being shut out of the playoffs on Sunday—blame the woman your star player is dating.

Two weeks ago, a report surfaced that Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has been dating Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton, whose sister Christie Upton is the manager of client relations for the team. After a sloppy last few games and disappointing 8-8 season, some fans are blaming Kate, saying that she’s a distraction. As one Twitter follower put it, “Mark Sanchez is dating Kate Upton? Now, I get it. I’d want the season to end, too. #theforceisstronginthatone.”
