Dear Kate: What’s the rule on using lingerie from an ex for your new beau?

Dear-Kate-column-identityBy Katharine Luckinbill

Dear Kate,

I’m seeing a new guy, and I want to heat things up in the bedroom with some sexy undergarments. Problem is, I don’t really need any new outfits (I’m lacking on cash, but not on clothes)…but the intimate articles I own were all gifts from an ex. What’s the protocol on using old clothes with a new guy?

Sincerely,

Panties in a Twist

Dear Panties in a Twist,

I understand your dilemma and I too would be hard pressed to throw/give away perfectly good lingerie, especially if I were on a tight budget.

But you have to see if from your new beau’s perspective…put yourself in his pants (pun intended)…would you want him re-gifting things that he had bought for an ex, to you? Probably not. It’s not that your clothes or lingerie necessarily have any sentimental connection to your ex – or at least I hope they don’t if you’re considering wearing them for the new fella – it’s just a general respect thing.

When I got into my first serious relationship after a yearlong dating spree, I decided to cut all my hair off. This was not a spectacular idea and probably a little rash in hindsight and my new boyfriend certainly didn’t care for my shorter ‘do – but I wanted a clean break from all of the guys that had played with or enjoyed my long hair in the past. I wanted my life with him to be new and fresh.

So the question that remains is how to furnish your new life with some new lingerie, and not go broke.

A few ideas:

Kate’s Dates: The art of the sexy outfit

Kate's Dates: The art of the sexy outfitBy Kate Richlin-Zack

I think it’s pretty safe to say, we want to make our men happy. We probably drive them crazy in the process but we genuinely want to make them happy, even if it means stepping a little outside our comfort zone.  That being said, when it comes to stepping outside my sweatpants and into a sexy outfit, I have some issues…

Guys think lingerie is so easy, and in theory it’s great. You slip into something lacy, put a string of pearls between your teeth, and confidently saunter around like a pouty model in a fancy boudoir photo shoot. Sounds like fun for everyone, but the whole sexy outfit thing is far more complicated and potentially embarrassing than anyone realizes.

Ladies, if you weren’t already hesitant to surprise your guy with thigh highs and stilettos, this week’s column might make you think twice before you attempt to fulfill his fantasy. And gentlemen, hold onto your hats, because you might think twice before even asking.

When it comes to sexy lingerie, the basics are pretty easy to obtain at your local mall – think Victoria’s Secret or Frederick’s of Hollywood. It’s not particularly embarrassing to walk in and browse the merchandise at either of these locations. You can also shamelessly walk around with your hot pink striped bag and continue shopping elsewhere without feeling the least bit embarrassed.

But when he requests something more… ummm… complicated… say a slutty nurse’s uniform or vinyl catsuit, my first thought is always, “Where the hell am I supposed to find THAT?!?”  There are actually plenty of places, but unfortunately they are often located in shady areas, like right off the highway next to the adult movie store with the broken neon sign flashing overhead.

Obsessed with: Curvy Kate bras

Curvy KateGoing for a bra fitting is one of my least favorite enterprises. Because as soon as the specialist determines that I’m a D-cup, they stop bringing in anything fun and frilly for me to try on and start reaching for the heavy artillery with three hooks that looks more like a nursing bra than anything I’d feel sexy in. So I was very pleased to discover Curvy Kate, a British lingerie brand that specializes in super cute styles for cup sizes D through K. There’s lace and intricate weaving and bows—which I’ve never been the biggest fan of, but whatever.

Curvy Kate is newly available in the US, through the website BareNecessities.com. Meaning, I will be stocking up.
