Kate’s Television Musings: If only Marge Simpson had talked to Joey Potter in 1998

By Kate Emswiler

“These movies aren’t real. It’s ‘take 22′, the girl’s bored and the guy’s gay.  It’s celluloid propaganda.”

—Joey Potter (aka Katie Holmes) of “Dawson’s Creek” episode 3, season 1 (original air date: February 3, 1998)

Marge:   “I can’t go along with this, Homer.”
Homer:   “Marge, when I join an underground cult, I expect a little support from my family.”

—”The Simpsons” episode 13, season 9 (original air date:  February 8, 1998)

I recently saw that Netflix was streaming “Dawson’s Creek”, and for a tender and ridiculous trip down nostalgia boulevard, I highly recommend re-watching the first season in all its awkward, poorly lit, boom-mike-in-the-shot glory.  Though as a warning, it’s so terrifically ’90s, your face might get stuck twisted in perma-cringe.

I’d remembered Katie Holmes‘s character, Joey, being glib and glum, but I’d forgotten how sassy and snappish she was.  In the third episode of the first season, “Kiss”, she berates Dawson for believing in “movie magic,” insisting that real romance is not the way Hollywood depicts it.  Dawson calls her bitter and cynical and insists that when she actually falls in love with someone, she’ll believe in the “magic” too.

Smart-mouthed Joey just rolls her eyes and says, “You used to be bitter and cynical, too.  You were far more interesting.”

Do we prefer Kate Holmes or Katie Holmes?

Katie Holmes or Kate Holmes?By Kate Torgovnick

I know, I know — you are sick of hearing about Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise‘s split. But I promise that the readers of this site will be interested in this twist, which I somehow managed to miss last week. Apparently, Cruise and Holmes butted heads over, of all things, her first name. While she preferred “Katie,” he pushed hard to get her to become “Kate.”

Holmes was born “Kate Noelle Holmes,” but she’s gone by “Katie” professionally since back in the “Dawson’s Creek” days. However, Cruise was apparently not so into that little “-ie.” While Holmes was pregnant with daughter Suri, Cruise explained in an interview why he had taken to calling his wife “Kate.”

“Katie is a young girl’s name,” Cruise said at the time. “Her name is Kate now – she’s a child-bearing woman.”

9 reasons I’m sad that Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are dunzo

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes weddingBy Kate Torgovnick

The rest of the world seems pretty happy about the fact that Katie Holmes has filed for divorce from Tom Cruise. The Telegraph titled their article on the split “Marriage Impossible?” Meanwhile, Amelia McDonell-Parry of The Frisky wrote, “Well, her contract must be up. Five years after they tied the knot in Italy, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are splitting.” Sherri Reed of The Stir took things a big step farther, writing, “Thank God, Katie Holmes has finally escaped that sham of a marriage … Run Katie run! Suri, take off your heels and run with her!”

So I know that I am in the minority in actually feel pretty bummed about this parting. Yes, Scientology freaks me out and I very much dislike the idea of religion where you buy your way in. But still, these two really did seem in love. And it’s always sad to see that end, no matter what.

After the jump, 9 reasons I’m sad that Katie and Tom are no more.

Tom Cruise wears codpiece for Katie Holmes, while Catherine Zeta-Jones channels Pat Benatar

Tom Cruise as Stacee JaxxBy Kate Torgovnick

Tom Cruise kept an unusual memento from the set of “Rock of Ages”—the jewel-encrusted, dragon-shaped, codpiece that he wears as rock star lothario Stacee Jaxx in the film. And in the TMI department, Cruise has shared that he still wears the bit of costuming—which he sports in the movie during a love scene with two groupies—for his wife of five years, Katie Holmes. “Yeah, I wear it,” Cruise told E! News at the premiere of the film earlier this week. “[Katie] laughed [when she first saw it]. It’s hilarious.”

But apparently, Suri Cruise was more disturbed than amused by her dad’s flamboyant costuming in the musical, which opens in theaters tomorrow. “When I had the eyeliner on and the painted nails, she was a little taken aback by that,” Cruise told “On-Air with Ryan Seacrest” on Monday. “She was like, ‘What is happening to my daddy?’”

Another star getting a very new look for “Rock of Ages?” Catherine Zeta-Jones. The normally sultry star plays a no-fun, Bible-thumping, please-do-stop-the-music type in the film. But hey, at least she gets to sing some Pat Benatar. Hear her version of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” after the jump.

Tom Cruise gushes about Katie Holmes in new Playboy interview

Katie Holmes and Tom CruiseI know that, at one point in time, Playboy was all, “I read it for the articles.” But my impression was that said time had long since passed. So I was a little surprised to see that Tom Cruise, a man who does not give a ton of interviews, did a Q+A for the racy magazine’s June issue. In said interview he does talk about wife Katie Holmes, who he affectionately calls Kate. In fact, Cruise explained to Playboy why he named his P-51 Mustang fighter plane “Kiss Me Kate.” He says, “It covers two things I love most—my wife and movies.”

Oh, but he goes on to say even sweeter things about Holmes.

“She is an extraordinary person,” he says. “Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. When she becomes interested in something, she doesn’t talk about it, she does it. One week I said to her, ‘You’ve been up in the middle of the night. Is everything okay?’ She smiled and then threw this thing on my desk and said, ‘I wrote this script.’ She wanted to try it, and she did. She wanted to try designing clothes, and now her line is wonderful and, to me, an example of how she just creates beautiful things in her life. She has a voice and warmth as an artist, as a mother. She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better.”

Silly bloggers: Katie Holmes isn’t actually topless in these photos

Katie Holmes in "topless" H.Stern adsBehold, some headlines that were splashed yesterday above these Katie Holmes images, from an ad campaign for H.Stern Jewelers that is currently running in Brazil.

  • Katie Holmes Goes Topless in New H.Stern Jewelry Ads [Hollywood Life]
  • Whoa! Katie Holmes Strips Down in Steamy H.Stern Ads [Us Weekly]
  • Katie Holmes Goes Topless for New Ad Campaign [ABC News]
  • Katie Holmes Topless: Strips for Sexy H.Stern Campaign [Daily Mail]

Tom Cruise painted “Kiss Me, Kate” on his plane

Tom Cruise's "Kiss Me, Kate" planeAnnoying thing #2 that happens when you are named Kate: you are regularly confronted with people making references to the musical “Kiss Me, Kate.” Annoying thing #1 that happens when you are named Kate: sometimes, said references are made by a person who, until that moment, you had found attractive.

But apparently Katie Holmes does not have the same aversion to the Cole Porter musical that I do. In fact, she loves it.

When recently asked about romantic things Tom Cruise has done for her, she said, “Two years ago he took me up on his P-51 Mustang, a fighter plane from World War II. He painted the words, ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ on the side.”

Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham dress like twins. On purpose.

Katie Holmes and Victoria BekchamRemember in elementary school, when you and your best friend would talk on the phone the night before school, and devise a plan to dress like twins? You’d spend at least 30 minutes going through all the items in your closet until you found something fairly generic that both of you could handle.  This was around the same time when you begged—begged!—your parents to get a phone with a cord long enough for you to pull it into your bedroom and shut the door. And when you shared “best friends” heart necklaces.

Well, Katie Holmes admits that she and bestie Victoria Beckham still do this.
