All about Kate Spade’s apartment

By Kate TorgovnickKate Spade

In my mind, I imagined that designer Kate Spade lived in an abode full of whimsical wallpapers, polka dots and bright colors. And it appears that I may not be that far off. Spade chatted with the Kansas City Star (apparently, she is from Kansas City) about her home—the third floor of a Manhattan apartment building built in 1910.

It’s very open, and it’s on a corner. Windows wrap the apartment,” says Spade. “It was a wreck. The guy who had lived there had been there for 40 years. No one had taken down the molding, which we appreciated. We didn’t move any walls, like we’ve seen a lot of people do. Why would you mess with such a great layout?”

So what home decor is Spade absolutely crazy for? Lamps, the designer shares.

“I love lamps. I can’t stand overhead lighting. I have to have everything on a dimmer. In the morning, it’s on bright. It’s cheery. When the day goes on, the light gets a little lower,” she says. “I like lampshades to be pleated and made out of fabric. And I like paper ones when they’re gold-lined — it’s such pretty light.”

Somehow, I sense a home line coming out of this interview.

Obsessed with: Kate Spade bow ties and gingham nails

Kate Spade spring 2013 bow coat

By Kate Torgovnick

My favorite part of New York Fashion Week? Why, the Kate Spade show, of course! Spade’s spring 2013 collection is all about bright colors, adorable cuts and, of course, bow ties. I am a little too obsessed with this bow tie coat, worn over a striped dress. So chic!  [Fashionista]

Oh, but there are two more great looks after the jump, including a bow tie dress and a set of gingham fingernails to match another adorable romper.

Kate Spade book clutches

By Kate Torgovnick

Anyone have $325? Because I really want one of these Kate Spade clutches. Made to look like classic books, they are adorable and great conversation starters to boot. And I especially love that the back of the “Romeo and Juliet” version reads, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Music Break: The Vivian Girls tour with Kate Spade

Another day, another reason to love Kate Spade. The fashion brand has kicked off the Florence Broadhurst Tour, driving a vintage bus across the country and making stops in select cities to bring fashionable ladies their gorgeous new collection, which features prints from the iconic wallpaper designer. On the road, the bus must command a lot of attention—after all, it’s got a bright red top and a Broadhurst floral print bottom. When it stops in a city, a side is removed, a set of black-and-white striped stairs are added and it becomes a pop-up shop, complete with neon signage. The Kate Spade bus has already made stops in Seattle and Los Angeles. Today, it arrives in Austin.

But I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. The Vivian Girls are on-board, playing a show in each city!

Obsessed with: Pretty much everything in this Kate Spade ad

Kate Spade teams up with Florence BroadhurstWhat can I say? Kate Spade just speaks to me. The woman loves a black and white print, especially paired with a bright punch of color—just like I do. And I adore that Kate Spade looks are always demure and girly, but with enough of a wink to keep things from feeling too prim.

Which brings me to Kate Spade’s new collaboration with Florence Broadhurst, the legendary Australian wallpaper designer. When I saw this ad in a magazine this week, I freaked. Spade has taken Broadhurst’s designs from wall-wear to truly stunning dresses, like this one. Oh, and can we talk about this trimmed trench coat? Man, I wish I could live in this photo. But I’ll  just have to dream, as the dress is $498 and the trench is $698. Sigh.
