Kate of the Week: Our very own Kate Richlin-Zack, who pours her heart out every week in “Kate’s Dates”

Kate Richlin-ZackThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I thought we’d take a minute to get to know Kate Richlin-Zack of Bernardsville, New Jersey, who is currently looking for an excuse to move to New York City. Yes, technically you already know a lot about her because she writes the amazing relationship column Kate’s Dates. But it’s high time to back up and get to know the basics. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

What do you do for a living?

You name it, I’ve done it. I started working at 13 and I think I’ve had every job you can imagine. I worked at Victoria’s Secret and spent more money on underwear than I earned working there. I was a tap dance instructor, secretary, office manager, assistant piano teacher, and mailroom clerk. I also sequenced DNA before I was legally old enough to drink. There were times in my life when I dated like it was my job.

But the only thing I’ve ever done consistently was write.

How did you fall into writing?

I’ve had a journal since I was 8-years-old and I still write almost every day.

Kate of the Week: Digital marketing maven Kate Trgovac, who chose her first name

Kate TrgovacThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Trgovac of Vancouver, British Columbia. Yes, you heard that right, folks—our first Canadian! Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

You changed your name to Kate. What about the name spoke to you? Why did you feel like you were meant to be a Kate?

Starting in high school, through college and into my professional life, my friends called me either by my last name or by my initials “KT.” (My birth name was “Karin.”) I really liked the hard sound of KT but not the two syllable-ness of it. So I thought about changing my name to Kate. But I wanted to make sure it suited me first. So I booked a two-week vacation to the wilds of Newfoundland but registered as “Kate” and told everyone there my name was Kate. And at the end of two weeks, I knew it was supposed to be my name. So when I got home, I started the paperwork and legally changed it.

What’s your favorite thing about your name?

That I chose it.

You are a digital marketer and social media strategist. What, exactly, does that mean?

My company’s (LintBucket Media) unofficial tag line is “we help companies not be jerks online.” We’re there to support businesses who want to use digital and social channels to communicate with their customers. We help them negotiate the technology, but more importantly, understand the ever-changing expectations and etiquette of online spaces.

Kate of the Week: Kaitlin “Kaitertot” Marie, secretary and zombie film nut

Kaitlin MarieThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kaitlin Marie, 24, of Valparaiso, IN, about 45 minutes outside Chicago. Tomorrow, she’ll be launching a new column on the the site called “My CompliKAITed Life,” about being a post-college grad living with her parents and hoping to get started on her career path as soon as possible. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kait.

Who is your favorite famous Kate?

Oooh, so hard to choose! I was Kathryn Howard (Henry VIII’s fifth wife) for Halloween one year, after I did a research project on her. I always thought that people who were beheaded (and consequently haunted places like the Tower of London) were very interesting. I’m a morbid kid at heart.

Tell me about a Kate out there who you wish were a household name.

Katherine Anne Porter. She’s one of my favorite writers, and I suppose she’s pretty well known if you’re Englishy and into older American short stories. She’s got such a great style. I love her writing. I think her most well known story is “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall.”

What do you do?

I’m a mild mannered secretary by day and a sexually charged vigilante in spandex by night. Although most nights I just blog or goof off on Pinterest. It’s social media vigilante-ism.

Kate SilverThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Silver, 31, who is very new to Chicago after a few years in New York. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

What’s your favorite thing about your name?

I very rarely have to spell it.

Your least favorite thing about your name?

Sometimes I think it’s too simple. Didn’t you ever want to be called Zoë?

Who is your favorite famous Kate?

Cate Blanchett. I just think she’s the coolest thing. And I’m partial to the C-spelling.

Tell me about a Kate out there who you wish were a household name.

I really like the Welsh singer Cate Le Bon. She sounds a bit like Nico, which only adds to her appeal.

What do you do?

I’m a copywriter at an ad agency.

Kate of the Week: Katharine Luckinbill, our new Dear Kate

There are so many fascinating Kates out there. Every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Katharine Desiree Luckinbill, 27, of Manhattan. Because starting on Thursday, she will be doling out advice to your assorted problems in a new column called Dear Kate. Since she’ll be peeking into your lives, I thought it was only fair that you know a bit about her. Without further ado, 13 questions with Katharine.

What do you do?

I work as a Talent Coordinator at JWT Advertising—that’s my day job. In my free time, I teach yoga to friends in the park pro bono, and I wrote a show for the cabaret circuit in NYC that sold out 6 nights last year. I’m bringing it back this fall.

How did you get started in your line of work?

Well … how much time do we have? I was an actor for a while, got a BFA in Theatre. Then I became a yoga teacher to make some money in-between acting work … and worked as a birthday party clown (seriously) on the weekends. Which lead me to teaching preschool and early education in Los Angeles, and then NYC. Then I took a big job off Broadway in a little disaster called “Dracula” and after that earthquake was over, I decided to quit it all. I went into the corporate world to finally have a life of stability – and haven’t looked back since. It’s amazing how paid vacation days can change a person.

Kate of the Week: Caitlin Abber, the marketing consultant and writer who is addicted to diners

Caitlin AbberThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Caitlin Abber, 28, of Brooklyn, NY. Without further ado, 13 questions with Caitlin.

What do you do for a living?
I am a marketing consultant and a writer. I work with brands to help grow their businesses and make them more popular on the Internet. As a writer, I am my own marketing manager – though the process is slightly different for a person than a company.

How did you get started doing PR?

I’ve always been a blogger, and about 6 years ago I was living in San Francisco and working  at a receptionist job that gave me ample time to write. A startup found my site, and asked me to help them out with content development and outreach. It was sort of like a pretty girl being discovered by a modeling scout at a pizza parlor – only I am way less leggy.

Kate of the Week: Kaitlin Schuster, actress, director, and improv comedian who had a pet rat named Miracle Rainbow

Kaitlin Schuster_0186

There are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kaitlin Anne Schuster of Park Slope, Brooklyn. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

What do you do?

I act, I direct, I write, I make stuff up and people laugh at it.

How did you get started in your line of work?

Well. All the kids either did sports or school plays. I was never going to be an Olympic Athlete so singing and dancing was the obvious choice. Although, I’m a pretty miserable dancer. I work it to my advantage at parties now and it’s like “hey! i’m awkward! join the fun!” but you don’t really get that as a kid.

What’s something you wish people knew or understood better about what you do?

Everyone’s artistic career follows a different path. Success is completely individual and non-linear. So therefore, person whose kid I went to high school with, when I see you in the grocery store ’round X-MAS time, please stop asking me when you’re going to see me making out with Robert Pattinson on the silver screen. It’s offensive.

Kate of the Week: Kate Ellenz, operations manager and board game master who dreams of traveling to Antartica

Kate Ellenz

There are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Ellenz, 22, of Seattle, Washington. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

What’s your favorite thing about your name?

I like to think it suits me. I definitely “look” like a Kate. It’s always strange when someone’s name doesn’t fit the way they look. Also I really haven’t ever met a Kate I didn’t like. I’m sure you’d all agree, Kates are pretty awesome.

Your least favorite thing about your name?

When I was growing up, I went by Katie and I felt like I had the most popular name ever. It really drove me crazy. At one point I was in a class in high school with five other Katies. When I got to college I thought Kate sounded more mature. At that point I’d never met another Kate so it seemed a good idea.

Another least favorite part, my best friend’s affectionate nickname for me: Kathleenie-weenie.

Kate of the Week: Kate Radway, who is representing for us at ESPN

Kate RadwayThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Radway, 28, of Plainville, Connecticut. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

What do you do?

I am an associate producer at ESPN. I currently produce and edit video content for ESPN studio shows and Sports Center.

How did you get started at ESPN?

I always wanted to be a sports writer. Growing up in Durham, NC, with a mother who taught at Duke, college basketball was everywhere. I loved waking up and reading the sports section of our local papers. I have always been intrigued by the intersection of sport and society and how the sports world often reflects what is happening in society at large. I went to college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I studied History and Political Science. While I always knew I wanted to be in the sports media world, I liked history and learning a little too much to focus specifically on journalism at the time. After graduating I got a sports radio internship in Chicago and then attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern where I received my Masters in magazine writing. While at grad school, I did an informational interview with ESPN and was offered a production assistant job when I graduated.

Kate of the Week: Katie Herzog the artist, librarian, and Guerrilla Girl enthusiast

There are so many fascinating Kates out there. Every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. About a month ago, I profiled one Katie Herzog of Durham, North Carolina. Soon after, a reader tip alerted me to the fact that there’s another awesome Katie Herzog out there, an artist and librarian in California. So this week, I would like you to meet Katie Herzog, 32, of Glassell Park, Los Angeles. Without further ado, 13 questions with Katie.

1. What do you do?

I make art and work part-time as an assistant librarian. I was recently appointed Director of the Molesworth Institute, which has been dedicated to the proliferation of library humor and disjunctive librarianship since 1956. Last summer I attended Cycling for Libraries, the first international library “unconference” on wheels, and painted bike jerseys with Molesworth Institute quotes on the back I gleaned from Norman Steven’s book, “Archives of Library Research from the Molesworth Institute.” Quotes include “We find the library world, like the real world, impossible to understand on a rational basis,” and “Freedom From Information.” The jerseys are currently on display at the Palo Alto Research Center, where I have a solo exhibition up through March 30th, 2012. Please stop by if you’re in the South Bay! It’s open to the public M-F 8am – 5pm. Or you can check out installation shots of the show here.

2. How did you become a librarian/artist?

My first job was at Klutz Press. I tripped on the entranceway and was hired on the spot, no joke. I worked with a very nice man named Davey in the shipping department in a warehouse full of rubber chickens, juggling paraphernalia, aerobies, and yo-yos, which were attached to the spiral binding of books. Klutz later published the infamous “Encyclopedia of Immaturity.” I attribute my recent work in experimental lexicography, ebook charcuterie, and bottom shelf conceptualism to this influence.

Kate of the Week: Katie Madonna Lee, tween TV show host with a soft spot for gummy bears and Kathleen Turner

FlabulousThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Katie Madonna Lee, 26, of Brooklyn, New York. Without further ado, 13 questions with Katie.

What do you do?

I write, direct and produce a tween hipster show called  ”Flabulous.” Oh, and I nanny part-time.

How did you get started in your line of work?

Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to live in a television set far away from my family and be on a TV show. But I came to it in a roundabout way. I went to Berklee College of Music for film scoring, but felt more drawn to the actual crafting of the film and story. Film people were much more quick, and more grounded in reality. So I transferred to film school and worked very hard out in the field, as a gaffer, a script reader, a personal assistant. Now I know too much!

Kate of the Week: Meet Kate McNulty, a mama who’d like to know what a ‘mermaid dog’ is

There are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Berry McNulty, 32, of Franklin, Massachusetts. Without further ado, 13 questions with Katie.

1. You’re a stay-at-home mom. Was that the plan or a path you were surprised to find yourself on?

Staying home was never my plan. My mom always worked full time so it’s not even something I thought of.  I am a nurse practitioner, so after all that schooling I never thought I’d choose to be UNEMPLOYED.  I worked part-time after my first child, Ellie. That was really nice. After I had Poppy, my husband and I decided either we’d have to hire a nanny or I would have to stay home. We decided the best person to raise our children is me, not a nanny. So since I was already breast-feeding and preparing all our food, I thought I’d go crazy and cloth diaper too. If I’m going to stay home I’d better make sure no one accuses me of being lazy!

2. What’s the highlight of your day? And the low light?

I like it when I pick up our older daughter from her morning pre-school. She always says really funny stuff on the way home. Today she told me she was a mermaid dog. I also enjoy a glass of red wine at the end of the day, when I know the cavalry (my husband) is coming home soon. The low light usually involves two crying children. And poop.
