Kate Beckinsale was sure she was in for a life of period dramas

Kate Beckinsale in "Total Recall"

I’m really somebody who never grew up thinking, ‘One day I’m going to be in large American movies waving machine guns.’ That wouldn’t have been believable. I was absolutely on line for mainly doing Chekhov and dramas and period dramas. That’s more my comfort zone. So, early in my career, one of the things I was anxious to do was to apprentice myself. I hadn’t gone to drama school, so I wanted to try as many different types of things as possible, to keep myself kind of muscular and to see what I could do and what I couldn’t. To put yourself into situations that aren’t necessarily in your comfort zone as an actor, I think that’s really important … I love that feeling of being somebody who portrays these really powerful, strong, cool women. At the same time it’s like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m getting away with this.’

Kate Beckinsale on her roles in this summer’s Total Recall, as well as in the vampire action franchise Underworld. I find this quote a nice reminder that, whatever you imagine for your career, be open, because you just never know what will happen. [Reading Eagle]

Kate Beckinsale on hiring a male stripper, ‘The Reverend Balls’

Director Len Wiseman revealed this week that when he was tapped to direct the “Underworld” franchise in 2003, he sat down and drew his version of the perfect woman, the dream girl he hoped to find for the lead role. He had yet to even meet his now-wife Kate Beckinsale, who eventually got the part. And yet the drawing looked just like her, reports the New York Post.

Luckily, Beckinsale has no interest in painting a picture of herself as perfect. In past interviews, she’s revealed her penchant for pranks, her love of penis jokes and the fact that her daughter is highly embarrassed of her. And this week, she tells Conan O’Brien all about hiring a male stripper named The Reverend Balls when she was 14-years-old for her friend’s birthday. Apparently, long after the girls were traumatized, he wouldn’t leave because he couldn’t find his sock.

And this is why we love Beckinsale. Because she’s so willing to share ridiculous stories.

Kate Beckinsale almost played the three-breasted hooker in “Total Recall,” but another Kate got the part instead

Kate Beckinsale and Kaitlyn Leeb

Len Wiseman had a strange strategy for convincing his wife, the lovely Kate Beckinsale, to sign on for a major part in his remake of “Total Recall” when she said she could only make a cameo. No, Wiseman didn’t just beg her. Nor did he slyly challenge her to an arm wrestling match with the stakes being her participation. No, he asked the head of Sony Pictures to call her instead.

“When my husband first signed on to the project, he was like, ‘Oh my god, I really want you to play this bitch-psycho wife.’ I was totally offended and didn’t think any more of it for a while,” Beckinsale told MTV at Comic-Con last week. “We’d had a conversation about the fact that I wasn’t available and we were both being very grown-up about it and he said, ‘Well, maybe, will you play the three-breasted hooker just so that you’re in the movie?’ And I was like, ‘OK.’”

While Beckinsale was happy with her part, a role that made a big splash when the original movie come out in 1990, that’s not how things ended up.

Kate Beckinsale shares her favorite prank to pull on her husband

Kate Beckinsale and Len WisemanKate Beckinsale loves a good prank. And not just sneaking sex toys into her poor mother’s luggage as she is on her way to the airport. During an appearance on “Ellen” on Monday, Beckinsale revealed that she also loves pranking her husband, Len Wiseman, who directed the actress’ new flick, “Total Recall.” (Beckinsale has already discussed how odd it was filming sex scenes with co-star Colin Farrell in front of her hubby.)

Apparently, Wiseman is such a deep sleeper that Beckinsale discovered years ago that she could apply makeup, and much more, to his face while he was asleep, without waking him up.

“Once I found out that I could do the make-up, then it got really crazy and I’d start gluing a proper ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ beard on … and then a bullet hole, all this stuff you can get in any Halloween store,” said Beckinsale. “It’s hours of fun for me.”

Behold, Kate Beckinsale’s flip phone

Why am I so charmed by the fact that Kate Beckinsale still uses a flip phone, a piece of technology that hasn’t been relevant since at least the mid-aughts? I can imagine she has great finger dexterity from double- and triple-pressing keys as she sends text messages. Ahh, the days when we relied on auto-complete.

Kate Beckinsale says “Twilight” almost ruined Christmas

Kate Beckinsale on TwilightKate Beckinsale may be the star of the “Underworld” films, but that doesn’t mean that she is a fan of every vampire franchise. Beckinsale recently revealed that she was not too pleased when her daughter, Lily—who thinks she is terribly embarrassing—fell in love with Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” books.

“She read Twilight and was completely obsessed with them,” Beckinsale recently shared with US Weekly during an event for National Reading Month. “It actually almost ruined Christmas one year because all she wanted to do was be a vampire and she didn’t want anything on her Christmas list.”

It’s not the first time that Beckinsale has slighted a member of the “Twilight” family.

Kate Beckinsale is an embarrassment to her teenage daughter, and why this scares me

Kate Beckinsale and daughter LilyMy parents are cool. Very cool. In fact, in some ways, they are cooler than I am. They know they all the hot restaurants in New York City, and they’ve been to every new play. They stay out late at jazz clubs, and put together ensembles with the ease of stylists. Their apartment looks like a page out of Dwell.

However, when I was a teenager, I was absolutely mortified by my parents. I remember one time, I was a few minutes late meeting my dad, who had agreed to pick me up from a school dance. Because he didn’t have all day to wait around for me, he walked on into the gym to find me. As I saw him stroll through the pathetically ballooned gymnasium, I felt a tsunami of shame rush over me. As if having parents were a thing none of my friends and classmates could possibly relate to. I still can hear the awful tenor of the voice I used when my mom once dared to ask me if I’d done my homework when my cooler, older friends came to pick me up to go to a party one night. “Mooooom, you’re embarrassing me!” It’s a teenage refrain.

So I was felt a little better to hear that Kate Beckinsale, admittedly one of the coolest women in the world, has a teenage daughter who is thoroughly embarrassed by her.

Kate Beckinsale thinks she’d be ‘boring’ if she quit smoking. Au contraire.

Kate Beckinsale smokingKate Beckinsale was caught this week smoking a cigarette just moments after taking a whiff of a nasal spray. Apparently, Beckinsale is the kind of smoker who lights up even when she has a cold—and that’s usually a bad sign.

Beckinsale recently talked to the Daily Mail about her smoking habit. Apparently, she started puffing when she was 16-years-old and has only quit once, when she was pregnant with her daughter and had to. Here is why Beckinsale believes she can’t quit:

“I’d be insufferable if I didn’t smoke. You’d have to push me off a balcony I’d be so boring.”

This reminds me of a friend who tried to reason to me a few years ago that she couldn’t quit because, “I always meet guys on smoke breaks. It’s the easiest way to strike up a conversation: ‘Can I have a light?’ How will I ever meet anyone if I quit?”

Kate Beckinsale says filming sex scene with Colin Farrell was extra awkward since her husband was directing

Kate Beckinsale and Len WisemanFilming sex scenes is awkward, as actors often like to remind you. But Kate Beckinsale tells Women’s Health magazine that things were far more iffy for Colin Farrell when the two shot their intimate scenes in the upcoming remake of “Total Recall.” Why? Because Beckinsale’s husband, Len Wiseman (left), was directing the movie.

“I think it was worse for Colin,” Beckinsale says of the scene. “It’s awkward if you have to fondle the director’s wife. Especially with Len saying, ‘All right that’s it, you’re fired.’”

Oddly, these words sound like almost an exact echo of Kate Winslet describing shooting her sex scenes with Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie “Revolutionary Road,” with her then-husband Sam Mendes directing.
