Trivia: Kate Barclay 80, legally blind, holds first art exhibit

It shouldn’t surprise me anymore the awesomeness Kates can achieve. I have to thank my editor, Kate T., and the DailyMail.com for bringing this inspirational story to our attention. In this season of joy and hope, this week’s trivia seem especially appropriate.

Kate Barclay gave her first art exhibition this September at the spry age of 80. That in itself is an amazing tidbit, but not nearly the entire story. The senior artist, who produces over 30 paintings per year, is legally blind (although she hasn’t applied for official status). In 2008 she was diagnosed with macular disease which results in a loss of vision in the center of the eye.

Of the condition Kate says, “My condition is very annoying because it is like I am looking through a trellis fence all the time. If I want to see something I have to look through the gaps.”

Kate BarclayThere are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Barclay, 29, who lives in Ghana, West Africa. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.

What do you do?

I am a Peace Corps Volunteer.  I teach art at Savelugu School for the Deaf. I write all about it at the website Peripatetic Journal.

How did you get started in your line of work or study?

I am an artist by profession, and I wanted to do something more than stare at the wall of my studio.

What’s something you wish people knew or understood better about what you do?

It’s not so bad living without a toilet or running water, but I’d really like some yogurt.
