Kate Upton is continuing her meteoric rise from what’s-her-face model to household name. Yesterday on “Late Night with David Letterman,” it was revealed that Upton had nabbed the coveted cover of the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. With it, Upton landed a cover story in the New York Times and a full page image on the cover of the New York Post, not to mention an oversized billboard overlooking the Ed Sullivan theater near Times Square.
So, what do you think of Upton’s SI cover?
While homegirl could certainly use a little more fabric, especially on that bikini bottom, I think it’s pretty stunning. I love that Upton’s body isn’t crazy toned and has a touch of softness to it. She looks far more like myself and my female friends than 99% of models out there.
The NY Times’ story on Upton is actually pretty interesting, pointing out that the 19-year-old appeared on the scene after posting a YouTube video of herself doing the Dougie last year, rather than being signed by an agency at age 14 and stomping high profile catwalks for years. It’s a highly unusual path for a model but, hey, we will take it. Upton has now joined the ranks of other SI Swimsuit cover girls like Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum.
