There are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Katie Lyn Capone, 32, of New York. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.
What do you do?
I am a-work-from-home-mom. I do freelance graphic design for companies, but my passion is designing invitations and stationery under my studio name Oh So Suite. And of course, taking care of my sweet baby all the while! Watching her grow up trumps anything in life right now, I must say. I didn’t think I would be a great stay-at-home mom type, but I love it! I treasure being with her every second. She is the best boss I’ve ever had.
How did you get started in your line of work or study?
I have had a life long obsession with paper and all things stationery. It came to a head when my husband and I were planning our wedding in ‘07 and couldn’t find the perfect invite. Oh So Suite was born and it’s been a pleasure working with many different people on invitations to their special events ever since!
What’s something you wish people knew or understood better about what you did?
I have an extreme passion for invitations. I am not sure where it came from…I just love pretty things and when an invitation screams of the host’s style I get so happy I could pee my pants. OK, not really. But I really do a little dance when I hit the nail on the head with a great design!
In an ideal world, where making a living weren’t an issue, what would you be doing?
Probably traveling the world with my husband and baby.
What’s a band, television show, book, or movie that you hope Kate-book readers will go watch, listen to, or read RIGHT NOW?
Everyone should read East of Edenby John Steinbeck at least once—I’ve read it several times, the story just gets to me. And everyone should see the French film “35 Shots of Rum.” Such a simple and sweet story.
What’s your favorite stop to make on a road trip?
I wish I took more roadtrips, if I went on one tomorrow, I would say garage sales and flea markets along the route.
Who is your celebrity doppelganger?
I don’t know…I’ve been told Claire Danes and Kirsten Dunst, but I am not positive I agree.
What’s the first concert you ever went to?
Rusted Root with G Love opening for them! It was so fun!
If you were forced to get a tattoo right at this moment, what would you get?
I am not a tattoo person—I admire them on other people, but I always joke with my husband, that if the human race depended on my getting a tattoo, I would get a blue dot on the bottom of my foot.
What’s your favorite thing about your name?
I like how simple and to the point Kate is.
Your least favorite thing about your name?
I think my friend Kate Defeo said it best … ”K-K-K-Katy, beautiful Katy” the song … it drove me nuts—and mostly elderly men would sing it to me and it was creepy.
Who is your favorite famous Kate?
I would say Kate Middleton right now. She really has become such an elegant and stylish icon. I admire her, it can’t be easy to be in the public eye and still look demure and graceful.
14. Tell me about a Kate out there who you wish were a household name.
Well, there’s my wonderful Grandmom, Catherine. Back in the day, she used to spoil my brother and I rotten and just loved the heck out of us—still does, although she’s not quite the spry little lady she used to be as she’s well into her 80s! But she is quite a character all the same. She used to call me “little itch” and then when I could start talking I’d call her “Big Itch”, except it came out wrong and sounded like “Bi-itch.” She would giggle loudly about that! I’d always try on her fake fur coat and put her high heels on and prance around her house. Her laugh and smile are what make her special. She is good woman with a good heart and I wish more people could hear her giggle. Whenever we would be hanging up the phone with her, she would always sign off with “be careful and I love you.” I hope when I am a Grandmom one day, I say those same words to my Grandchildren.
Know a Kate, Caty, Katherine, or Catelynn who needs to be Kate of the Week? Awesome! Send me a tip at kate.torgovnick@gmail.com. I will be in touch with them soon.
