There are so many fascinating Kates out there. And every week, Kate-book.com is resolving to introduce you to a new one. This week, I would like you to meet Kate Barclay, 29, who lives in Ghana, West Africa. Without further ado, 13 questions with Kate.
What do you do?
I am a Peace Corps Volunteer. I teach art at Savelugu School for the Deaf. I write all about it at the website Peripatetic Journal.
How did you get started in your line of work or study?
I am an artist by profession, and I wanted to do something more than stare at the wall of my studio.
What’s something you wish people knew or understood better about what you do?
It’s not so bad living without a toilet or running water, but I’d really like some yogurt.
In an ideal world, where making a living weren’t an issue, what would you be doing?
I am living in my ideal world right now! I am not ‘making a living,’ but I am happy.
What’s a band, television show, book, or movie that you hope Kate-book readers will go watch, listen to, or read RIGHT NOW?
“The Idiots” by Lars von Trier is a really amazing movie. I also love everything that Jared Diamond has written.
What’s your favorite stop to make on a road trip?
On road trips, I like to stop in huge truck stops and get a jumbo caffeinated fountain drink to keep between my legs while I’m driving. Yes, I know how that sounds.
Who is your celebrity doppelganger?
Maybe Kate Winslet. But I’ve never really identified with any celebrity or movie character.
What’s the first concert you ever went to?
Elliott Smith
If you were forced to get a tattoo right at this moment, what would you get?
Something abstract—like a simple geometric drawing.
What’s your favorite thing about your name?
It seems to fit me, and it’s sort of neutral—like, it doesn’t caricature me in some way.
Your least favorite thing about your name?
Everyone has it.
Who is your favorite famous Kate?
Kate Winslet!
Know a Kate, Caty, Katherine, or Catelynn who needs to be Kate of the Week? Awesome! Send me a tip at kate.torgovnick@gmail.com. I will be in touch with them soon.
