Do we prefer Kate Holmes or Katie Holmes?

Katie Holmes or Kate Holmes?By Kate Torgovnick

I know, I know — you are sick of hearing about Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise‘s split. But I promise that the readers of this site will be interested in this twist, which I somehow managed to miss last week. Apparently, Cruise and Holmes butted heads over, of all things, her first name. While she preferred “Katie,” he pushed hard to get her to become “Kate.”

Holmes was born “Kate Noelle Holmes,” but she’s gone by “Katie” professionally since back in the “Dawson’s Creek” days. However, Cruise was apparently not so into that little “-ie.” While Holmes was pregnant with daughter Suri, Cruise explained in an interview why he had taken to calling his wife “Kate.”

“Katie is a young girl’s name,” Cruise said at the time. “Her name is Kate now – she’s a child-bearing woman.”

Apparently, his ploy worked for a while. But in their split, it appears that Holmes is taking back her first name. As Kathleen Perricone of OMG Yahoo! points out, “In her statement announcing the split, Holmes’ lawyer said, ‘This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family.’ Cruise’s response? ‘Kate has filed for divorce.’”

All this leads to the obvious question—do you prefer Katie or Kate? Thoughts in the comments section, please.

  1. Fabri-Kate says:

Tomato, tom-ah-to…..the whole “Katie is a young girl’s name” seems like a way for Cruise to assert some sort of control over his (soon-to-be-ex)wife and her career.
The only name change that comes to child-bearing women is “Mommy”

I completely agree! WAAAAAY too controlling on Tom’s part.

    Creepy to the max.

  3. Useful information. Fortunate me I discovered your site accidentally, and I am shocked why this twist of fate did
not took place earlier! I bookmarked it.
