Dear Kate: I hate it when my bra straps show! Help!!

Dear-Kate-column-identityBy Katharine Luckinbill

Dear Kate,

I’m seriously not sure if I’m just a prude but I really hate seeing the bra straps through my dress or shirt, but it seems like bra manufacturers and clothes designers are not conferring with each other. No matter what I do, they always seem to peek out. Is it acceptable these days to just let them be loose? Do you have any good tips on how to rock my summer clothes and support “the ladies” without this fashion faux pas?

Thanks,

Strapped

Dear Strapped,

You are so totally NOT a prude. I absolutely hate it when my bra straps show – even if they are the exact same color as my shirt or dress – it’s just a little tacky. So I think you just have good sense!

Racerback tops are extremely flattering on most body types, so it’s extremely frustrating when you have to see these ugly straps showing outside the boundaries of your tank! It’s the “whale tail” of the top half!

Even the classiest and the trashiest celebs fall victim to this fashion faux pas!

Also, let’s be honest, those little clear plastic straps are an uncomfortable pain in the butt, and strapless bras are a joke if you have anything larger than a 30AA.

Recently I discovered a little fashion fix GEM! I use it ALL the time. It’s called “The Strapper” and you can find it at most beauty supply stores and major pharmacies. You can also buy it directly from the website – where they have the “Swarovski Strapper” which makes a great gift for a bride, bachelorette, or even a gift for yourself for a fancy night out.

One thing about this little tool – you need to use it with a bra that has straps you can make extra long. If your straps won’t get long enough to pull them together it can be really uncomfortable! So just make sure you wear it with the right bra.

Another great fix is to buy a bra with convertible straps that convert into a halter strap. Personally, I think that looks a whole lot better than the straps hanging out of the side. This way it just looks like you’re wearing a cute bathing suit or necklace!

Keeping to the “Kate-Book” theme, I recently came across a bra company by the name of Curvy Kate, they sell some AWESOME bras for girls who just have to wear one! Here is a listing of stores in the US that sell the brand.

I hope some of these suggestions work for you before the summer is over and you have to cover up those gorgeous shoulders! (I don’t have to see them to know they’re GORGEOUS!)

You're GorgeousHere’s to Kates. And Boobs. And being gorgeous.

The VS Pink line has a bra made for racerback shirts that is really comfortable and cute. I’m sure other people make them, too, but I have it and love it. I know people who use things like The Strapper and love those, too. Either way I agree that straps should not be seen!

If your straps are going to show then they should be beautiful, like jewelry. Strappys Decorative Bra Straps offers beaded, rhinestone, jewelry and designer fabric bra straps that you can pick and choose to match your outfit. Just attach to your strapless bra and you can go out with confidence and let your straps show…beautifully!

Awesomeness! I have seen bra strap gathers before but they weren’t well constructed or sturdy. Psyched about trying these! And who knew with the Swarovski studded; beautiful and functional. Thank you, Kate–you’ve done it again.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s cute to see bra straps when someone wears a racerback tank? I’ve been doing that all summer, even to work on the theory that it was a little laidback punch to an otherwise very put-together look. Sigh.

Sorry to say, Ms. Torgovnick, but seriously bra straps are not accessories. Underwear should remain under… please, pretty pretty please.

It starts with a bra strap and before you know it people are showing their thong y’s and butt cheeks in public… squeak!
