Cait on Culture: What’s your summer jam?

By Caitlin Abber

The summer jam is as crucial to summer as BBQs, wedges, and blockbusters. Summer jams of the past have included Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” Third Eye Blind’s “Semi Charmed Kind of Life,” and LFO’s “Summer Girls.” If any of those songs come on at a backyard soiree or a day in the beach, the crowd is likely to be transported back in time to a year when Abercrombie and Fitch was a relevant cultural reference. And isn’t that the point of the summer jam? To bring us to a magical happy place, where we are younger, tanner, and having more fun than we actually are?

To that end, I put together a list of 5 songs I think are in the running to be the Summer Jam of 2012.

Calvin Harris “Feel So Close”
This is a super fun, breezy song with a dance beat. What else do I really need to say?

R. Kelly “Feelin’ Single”
“Feelin’ Single” has a classic R&B riff, ridiculous R. Kelly lyrics, and panders to newly single people – the best audience to make music for, in my opinion. (I’m talking about you, Kelly Clarkson.)

Rihanna “Where Have You Been”
Rihanna’s music was made for summer, and “Where Have You Been” is an insta-hit. It will be the song you hear all around your neighborhood. I’m calling that now.

Sleigh Bells “Demons”
Chances are this won’t be very popular at your family picnic, but take this literal jam out for a spin on a Saturday night and you will feel cooler than your uncle who partied with Sinatra.

Carly Rae Jepsen “Call Me Maybe”
Okay, I’m already sick of it – but that doesn’t mean everyone else is. It’s still cute, it pretty much sounds like a popsicle tastes, and it’s about flirting. Sorry Kates, this song’s moment has not passed.

So, what are you listening to this summer? I love music suggestions!

Summertime always makes me want to listen to the soundtrack to Baz Luhrman’s “Romeo + Juliet.” I play it when I’m relaxing on the beach!

So strange. Not two minutes ago Radiohead’s “Talk Show Host” from that soundtrack came up on my playlist. Synchronicity!

I was also sick of “Call Me Maybe,” until I listened to some of the amazing remixes that are out. Now–in love with it’s cheesiness all over again.
